Stories are powerful! Why is that? Each of our stories is unique and relatable. As Patti Digh stated, “The shortest distance between two people is a story.” Alyce shared with us Articulated Intelligence’s formula for telling the best stories in your job interviews.
It can be helpful to think of storytelling as an enrichment tool for an interview, or even any interaction. Alyce’s Interviewing Best Practice #1 is to take the time to find the most relevant story. Remember that the first story you think of may not always be the best story for the situation. Use this quick game to generate ideas:
What is your trigger word? It can be job, boss, manager, team, etc. For your trigger word, choose one word for each: First, Best, Last, Worst.
Best practice #2 is to incorporate “sticky” elements when telling your story. Here are a few examples:
Change over time
Add meaning and message
Everyone has stories, and hiring leaders want to hear your true and authentic stories. Watch this video for an example shared during our session.
